Message from the President

It is always fun to go back to campus even when it rains -- as Ithaca is known to do. And so it was fun – and raining – in Ithaca on our class birthday reunion party in June, 2006. The gathering was small, a few classmates, some with significant others, but we made merry in honor (can we call it that?) of turning 64.  Click here to see a few pictures of the occasion, which took place at the lakeside home of classmate and Cornell trustee Carolyn Neuman and her husband John '62.

We also took advantage of the weekend to check out the setting for our new class gift, support for the Carol Takton Center on North Campus. The recently opened Takton Center provides services to ease first-year University students into life at Cornell. The intent is to help new students meet academic and personal challenges of their college experience through a wide variety of innovative programs including academic reviews, study-skills workshops, poetry readings and the like. Stop by for a visit to see the impressive layout and the plaque honoring the Class of ’64 gift. (The Center entrance is on the lower level of Balch Hall, across from Beebe Lake.)

Thanks to the many of you who continue to support the class and Cornell with your annual class dues. However, class correspondent, Bev Johns who has written our class column for many years would like to remind all of you to please send in your latest news.

Bob Goldfarb Is Our Latest Rhodes AwardeeBob Goldfarb '64

For more than 25 years, Robert Goldfarb has shaped the direction of Cornell University through his service to some of its most influential organizations and efforts. Bob served three terms on the Cornell University Council and held leadership roles in a number of its committees, with a special interest in those relating to undergraduate admissions and financial aid.

Bob's many contributions to Cornell were recognized when he was selected as a 2007 recipient of the Frank H. T. Rhodes Exemplary Alumni Service Award. The award is given in recognition of extraordinary service to Cornell, in both length and quality of contribution by the individual, through activities within the broad spectrum of Cornell's various alumni organizations, associations, and related groups.

Bob was a guest of honor at a dinner on October 12, 2007, during Homecoming Weekend, where he  received his award and graciously offered his appreciation. Bob was accompanied by his wife Frankie. Also attending were classmates Marcia Gooldschlager Epstein, Carolyn Chauncey Neuman and Bruce Wagner. See photos from the happy event.

Previous '64 awardees include Nancy Taylor Butler, Marcia Goldschlager Epstein, Emmett W. (Mac) MacCorkle III and Carol Britton MacCorkle. While gathering Rhodes Awards is not a competition, only one Cornell class has more awardees than our class -- the class of 1953, with eight.
