Minutes: Class of ‘64 Meeting, February
18, 2006
From: Barbara (Bobbie) Furman Attardi, Secretary
Location: Philadelphia Downtown Marriott
Present:
The meeting was called to order at about
2:30 p.m. by Class President Janet Spencer King.
Turnout was low this year due to the Philadelphia location and timing
(Presidents' Day Weekend)
The minutes from the class meeting in 2005 had been
circulated on line and were not read.
Treasurer’s Report (Linda Meltzer)
We discussed raising our dues from $40 to
$45 ($65 for a Cornell couple) to cover operating expenses. Dues includes a
subscription to the
Cornell Alumni
Magazine. A motion to raise dues passed unanimously. Dues without the
Alumni Magazine will be $20. This increase won't take effect until next year
(2006-07).
We would like to make a gift to the
University of $10,000 to $15,000. Carolyn Neuman talked to
Rich Glick, an employee of CU
Alumni Affairs and Development assigned to our class, about a naming
opportunity. Two alternatives were presented: naming the office in the
Carol Tatkon
Center in Balch Hall for $15,000 or the computer room in the
Latino Living Center in Anna Comstock Hall for $10,000.
Rich Glick came to speak to our group and
elaborated on the choices. The Carol Tatkon Center is a learning resource
for the entire freshman class which sees about 1,000 students per day. It's
the site of freshman seminars, peer advising (counseling, tutoring), and
presentations by professors. Our gift would become part of the endowment for
the Center and would generate income each year (up to about $1,000). It
would be recognized with a plaque and could possibly be supplemented in the
future. We found the Carol Tatkon Center the more appealing alternative. A
motion was made to make this gift, and it passed unanimously. We will get
further information about exactly how the money will be spent. We will plan
a dedication of this room in June at the Mini-Reunion in June (see below).
Class Web Site
Our class has a new web
site. Many thanks to Bruce Wagner and Bob Friedenson. We would like to
keep the website fresh and at a high level. We will post the minutes on this
site.
Mini-Reunion
We plan to have a Mini-Reunion
in Ithaca at the same time as the regular class reunions (Friday, June 9 to
Sunday, June 11) to celebrate the Class of '64 turning 64 (at least many of
us) sponsored by CRC (Continuous Reunion Club). We will stay at CRC's
low-rise dorm.
This will be a low pressure event. The CRC
initiation fee will be $25.00, and the dorm will cost $40.00 per night. A
button can be obtained for $50.00 to allow us entry into reunion events.
Carolyn Neuman has offered to host a barbeque at her lake house on Saturday
(afternoon or evening, rain or shine). We will email everyone who came to
one or both of the last two reunions to inform them of the plans. We
discussed possible activities (speaker such as
Glenn Altschuler,
Friday night dinner on a boat on the lake, a class hike,
paleontological museum, Saturday lunch with the athletic department in
the Statler, etc.) and incentives (CAU's seminar on
American History the same week).
Fund Raising
We didn't meet our 2004 Reunion goal for Tower Club. We need to get more
classmates participating. To reach fund-raising goals, we talked about the
importance of personal communication. We need to get lists of people to call
from Rich Glick (rdg10@cornell.edu;
607 254-6127). Discussion of fund raising and major gifts for the 2009
Reunion will begin next year.
JFK Memorial Award
This
award is to encourage a new Cornell graduate to enter a career in
government or other fields of public service; it is not a scholarship.
Emily
Adelman is the 2005 JFK awardee. She has been working in Washington, DC
in a non-profit organization dedicated to teaching Latino residents how to
start their own businesses.
Applications for the 2006 JFK Award will
arrive the third week of March, and the decision will be made in April.
Current award is $5,000. We will advertise one award with the option of
making a second if there are two very qualified applicants. A motion was
made and passed unanimously to raise the value of the award to $6,000. for
next year. Linda will get us information about how the value of the award
has increased over the years. Carolyn proposed that for our 50th reunion we
compile a book about awardees. Janet will work with Joan Melville to
identify previous awardees.
Class History
We still have no Class Historian. Send any material for archiving to Carolyn
Neuman.
At 4:45 p.m., the meeting was adjourned to
the cocktail lounge at the Downtown Marriott.
